ⲉⲙⲏⲣ
Coptic
Etymology
From Demotic r mr, ultimately from Egyptian
(r, “regarding, towards”) + mrw. The interpretation of mrw is unclear; Černý considers it to be
(mrw, “desert”), while Vycichl equates it with
(mrw), a variant form of
(mryt, “riverbank, quay, harbor”), which fits better with the Coptic evidence semantically but perhaps not phonetically. Synchronically equivalent to ⲉ- (e-, “to”) + ⲙⲏⲣ (mēr, “(opposite) shore”).
