Inherited from Old Gujarati ऊन्हालउ (ūnhālaü), from Gurjar Apabhramsa उन्हाल, उण्हाल + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit उष्णकाल (uṣṇakāla).[1] Cognate with Marathi उन्हाळा (unhāḷā), Punjabi ਹੁਨਾਲਾ (hunālā).
