Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *sperH- (“to kick, push away, make a rash movement”). Cognate with Ancient Greek σπαίρω (spaírō, “to hammer, make rapid movements”), Latin spernō (“move aside, push away”), English spur, spurn.
