From Middle Dutch struuf, from Old Dutch *strūf, from Proto-Germanic *strūbaz (“stiff, rough, bristly, shaggy”), from Proto-Indo-European *strewbʰ-, *strewb- (“stiff”). Cognate with Middle Low German struuf, West Frisian stroef, German straub and struppig.
