Etymology
From Proto-Tai *t.hajᶜ (“to weep”). Cognate with Isan ไห่, Lao ໄຫ້ (hai), Shan ႁႆႈ (hāy), Ahom 𑜑𑜩 (hay) or 𑜍𑜩 (ray), Zhuang haej. Within Kra-Dai, compare Sui qngeec (“to weep, to cry”), Southern Kam ngees (“to weep, to cry”), Proto-Hlai *C-ŋiːʔ (> ŋej³~ŋaj³ across the modern lects). Compare also Proto-Austronesian *Caŋis (“to cry, to weep”).
