Etymology

From χίλιοι (khílioi, “thousand”) +‎ ἄρχω (árkhō, “to rule”). Calque of Old Median *Hazahrapati- (“commander of thousand [men]”)[1][2], from *hazahra- (“thousand”) + *pati- (“lord, master”).
