From Proto-Hellenic *kʷʰtʰítis, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰgʷʰítis (“perishing, decrease”). Cognates include Sanskrit क्षिति (kṣíti, “perishing, downfall”) and Latin sitis (“thirst”). Synchronically analysable as φθίω (phthíō) +‎ -σις (-sis).
