Etymology
First attested as in den vlist in 1259. Derived from a hydronym, potentially derived in turn from Middle Dutch vlies (“layer of intertwined vegetation growing on top of a swamp”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -t or, alternatively, from Proto-Germanic *flu-.
