First attested as Cl. Medhuysen in 1491. Calque of West Frisian Lyts Midhuzen, derived from lyts (“small, little”) and a compound of Old Frisian mid (“mid-, middle”) and the plural form of hūs (“house”). The element klein was added to distinguish the settlement from Groot Medhuizen.
