Etymology

First attested in the Neung-eomgyeong eonhae (楞嚴經諺解 / 능엄경언해), 1461, as Middle Korean 싀다 (suita). Cognate with 쉬— (swi-, “to go bad, to turn sour”). Possibly related to Japanese (su, vinegar), 酸い (sui, sour).
