Etymology
Wasei kango (和製漢語), orthographically borrowed from Japanese 社会 (shakai, “society”), which was in turn a semantic readaptation of Chinese 社會/社会 (shèhuì, “public gathering for offering to the earth god”).

Usage notes
Use 社會/社会 (shèhuì) when referring to society as an "aggregate of people living together". When society in the sense of "organization or club" is meant, use 社團/社团 (shètuán) or 協會/协会 (xiéhuì).
