From Old Japanese. First attested in the Kojiki of 712.[1] Also found in the Nihon Shoki completed in 720, and in the Man'yōshū completed some time after 759.[2] Perhaps related to Middle Chinese (MC ɡɨunH, “geographic region: commandery, prefecture”).
