From 分かち (wakachi, “dividing, 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 分かつ (wakatsu, “to divide”).”) + 書き (kaki, “writing, 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 書く (kaku, “to write”).”). The kaki changes to gaki as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
