Etymology
From ⲡ- (p-) + Demotic jpt (“harem”), having become masculine in Coptic times. The form without article ⲁⲡⲉ (ape) is the earlier usage. Compare Ancient Greek Θῆβαι (Thêbai) and Ancient Greek Ωφις (Ōphis, “Aba al-Waqf, a village in Middle Egypt”).
