ἔτελις
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- ἐτελίς (etelís)
Etymology
Latin attilus (“kind of fish”) shows a general resemblance. Farther away are Latvian āte and Lithuanian atìs (“turbot”). Strömberg rather envisages derivation from ἔταλον (étalon, “yearling”), while DELG calls both suggestions improbable.
