From Proto-Tai *ɓaːwᴮ (“unmarried man”). Cognate with Lao ບ່າວ (bāo), Lü ᦢᦱᧁᧈ (ḃaaw1), Shan မၢဝ်ႇ (màaw) or ဝၢဝ်ႇ (wàaw), Ahom 𑜉𑜨𑜧 (mow) or 𑜉𑜨𑜧𑜈𑜫 (moww).
