Etymology
Borrowed from Pali jayanto (literally “conquered; triumphed; won”), the first word of a stanza in the Buddhist chant Mahā Jayamangala Gathā ("Great Verse of Victory and Auspices"), which says:
- Pali: Jayanto bodhiyā mūle sakyānaṃ nandi vaddhano.
- "Victorious at the foot of the Bodhi tree was he who enhanced the delight of the Sakyans."
