From Proto-South-Dravidian. It seems related to எழு (eḻu, “to emit sound”), எழால் (eḻāl, “musical notes of the yazh”), எழுப்பு (eḻuppu, “to call forth”) and எழுவு (eḻuvu). Cognate with Malayalam ഏറില് (ēṟilŭ, “music”).
