Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀮𑀩𑁆𑀩 (*labba) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-). Related to लफंगा (laphaṅgā). Compare Hindustani لَباڑ / लबाड़ (labāṛ), Oriya ନାବଡ଼ା (nabôṛa).
