From Old Marathi 𑘊𑘜𑘹 (eṇe), 𑘧𑘹𑘜𑘹 (yeṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀏𑀇 (ei), from Sanskrit एति (éti), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Háyti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Háyti, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁éyti. Cognate with Konkani येव्चे (yevce), Sinhalese එනවා (enavā).
