From Proto-Indo-Iranian *duHtás (“messenger; envoy to a far off place”), from Proto-Indo-European *dweh₂- (“far, long”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬎𐬙𐬀 (duta), 𐬛𐬏𐬙𐬀 (dūta).
