From Sanskrit प्रस्थान (prasthāna, “setting out, departure; walking, journey; source, cause”) + ނީ‎ (nī). Cognate to Sinhalese පටන් (paṭan, “to begin from, since”). Doublet of ފަށައިގެން‎ (faṣaigen̊) and ފަށަން‎ (faṣan̊)
