Etymology
Literally ben (“well”) + vinguda (“come”). Presumably a calque of Frankish term, from Proto-Germanic *wiljakwumô (“a welcome guest or arrival”), from which many modern Germanic forms descend, as English welcome.
The are many cognates in other Romance languages, such as French bienvenu, Spanish bienvenido and Italian benvenuto.
