Etymology

Uncertain. The second word may also be سُفْرَة‎ (sufra, “leather sheet for transporting food”). The word صَفْرَة‎ (ṣafra, “yellowness”) refers to the bile, bilious taste in the mouth. According to another version (possibly a folk etymology), the word means a mythical snake living in the belly and causing hunger. Lane says it means "hunger", based on the use in this expression.
