  1. Used to render the verb "to dislike".
    از این کتاب بدم می‌آید.
    Az in ketâb badam mi-âyad. (more literary)

    I dislike this book.
    از فیلم‌های آمریکایی بدمان می‌آید

Usage notes

This verb phrase has several points to note.

  • The verb is not transitive; its literal translation is closer to "to displease", though (with the preposition از (az)) it could be rather loosely translated as "(one's) bad comes (from)...". Thus, the element بد is inflected for possession. For example...
    • a phrase using "I dislike" requires بدم (badam),
    • "he/she dislikes" requires بدش (badaš),
    • "they dislike" requires بدشان (badešân), etc.
Simply add the appropriate pronominal suffix.
  • The preposition از (az) marks what in English would be the direct object of the verb "dislike". See the example sentences above.
