From the root ح ي و (ḥ-y-w). Cognate with Hebrew הֶחְיָה (hekhyá).

Verb

أَحْيَا (ʾaḥyā) IV, non-past يُحْيِي‎ (yuḥyī)

  1. (transitive) to give life to, to vivify, to quicken, to vitalize; to bring to life, to animate

      كَيْفَ تَكْفُرُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَكُنتُمْ أَمْوَاتًا فَأَحْيَاكُمْ ۖ ثُمَّ يُمِيتُكُمْ ثُمَّ يُحْيِيكُمْ ثُمَّ إِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ
      How do you disbelieve in Allah when He animated you when were inanimate and [when it is He who] shall disanimate you then reanimate you and to Him, you shall be returned?
    1. (figuratively, of land) to fertilize
      أَحْيَا الْفَلَّاحُ الْأَرْضَ
      ʾaḥyā l-fallāḥu l-ʾarḍa
      The farmer cultivated the land.

        وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ يُرِيكُمُ الْبَرْقَ خَوْفًا وَطَمَعًا وَيُنَزِّلُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَيُحْيِي بِهِ الْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ
        It is of His signs that He shows you thunder for you to fear and to seek. And He brings down from the sky water to vivify the earth after its lifelessness. Verily, these are signs for thinking men.
    2. (figuratively) to liven, to enliven
      أَحْيَا المُطْرِبُ حَفْلًا
      ʾaḥyā l-muṭribu ḥaflan
      The singer enlived a party.
  2. (transitive) to keep alive

        مَنْ عَمِلَ صَالِحًا مِنْ ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنْثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ فَلَنُحْيِيَنَّهُ حَيَاةً طَيِّبَةً
        man ʿamila ṣāliḥan min ḏakarin ʾaw ʾunṯā wahuwa muʾminun falanuḥyiyannahu ḥayātan ṭayyibatan
        Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while being a believer, We shall preserve him [to live] a good life.
    2. to save
      • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 5:32:
        وَمَنْ أَحْيَاهَا فَكَأَنَّمَا أَحْيَا النَّاسَ جَمِيعًا
        wa-man ʾaḥyāhā fa-kaʾannamā ʾaḥyā n-nāsa jamīʿan
        And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.
  3. (transitive) to restore to life
    1. to raise from the dead, to reanimate, resuscitate, to revive, to resurrect
      • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 2:73:
        كَذَٰلِكَ يُحْيِي اللَّهُ الْمَوْتَىٰ وَيُرِيكُمْ آيَاتِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
        kaḏālika yuḥyī l-lahu l-mawtā wayurīkum ʾāyātihi laʿallakum taʿqilūna
        Thus, Allah raises the dead and shows you His signs that you may discern.
    2. (of an idea or a practice) to revive; to restore, to reinstitute
      إِحْيَاءُ عُلُومِ الدِّينِ
      ʾiḥyāʾu ʿulūmi d-dīni
      The Revival of the Religious Sciences
  4. (transitive) to dedicate (nighttime) to prayer and worship
