Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܐܳܦܰܩܬܳܐ (ʾāpaqtā), ܐܰܦܩܰܥܬܳܐ (ʾap̄qaʿtā, “de-seeded cotton”) from ܦܩܰܥ (pqaʿ, “to split, to reave, to crack”), compare the etymology of فَقُّوس (faqqūs, “Armenian cucumber”).
