Related to Akkadian 𒋗𒈨𒊒 (/šumeru/, “Sumer”), Egyptian sngr (“Babylonia”), Hittite 𒋗𒈨𒊒 (/šanhar(a)/), all likely ultimately from Sumerian 𒌦𒊕𒈪𒂵 (ùĝ saĝ gíg-ga, “Sumerians”, literally “black-headed people”) or 𒆠𒂗𒂠 (ki-en-ĝir, “Sumer”, literally “place of the noble lords”).
