Etymology
Supposedly based on a. 500 C.E., Babylonian Talmud, Niddah 30:b: אדם ישן כאן ורואה חלום באספמיא (“A person sleeps here, and sees a dream in Spain.”), Spain being a distant place, thought at the time to be the end of the world.
