Etymology
Via early modern Dutch from Middle Dutch loterye, which is derived from the cognate of German Los (“lot”). The word originates from the bilingual contact zones of Flanders and may be a Frenchified form of earlier lotinghe (German Losung). Compare contemporary Dutch loterij, French loterie.
