掉 [diào] 动

1. ■ （物体因失去控制而下落） fall; drop; shed; come off:

掉下几滴眼泪 shed a few tears;

秋天， 树叶纷纷从树上掉下来。 Leaves fall off the trees in the autumn.

他的一颗门牙掉了。 One of his front teeth has dropped out.

我的上衣掉了一个扣子。 A button has come off my coat.

2. ■ （落在后面） fall behind:

那个跛足的孩子远远掉在后面。 The lame child lagged far behind.

3. ■ （遗失; 遗漏） lose; be missing:

单词中掉了一个字母 drop a letter from a word;

我把钥匙掉了。 I've lost my key.

这本书掉了两页。 Two pages are missing from the book.

4. ■ （减少; 降低） decrease; lessen:

他害了一场大病， 体重掉了十多斤。 During his serious illness he lost over ten jin.

5. ■ （摇动; 摆动） wag:

尾大不掉。 The tail is too big to wag.

6. ■ （回; 转） turn:

掉一个方向 swing;

把车头掉过来 turn the car round;

她掉过脸去， 不让人看见她脸红。 She turned aside to hide her blushes.

7. ■ （互换） change; exchange:

掉座位 change [exchange] seats; swop [swap] places with sb.
