Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰoros, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (catch, enclose), with some original meaning of "encircling/ring (dance)", whence χόρτος (khórtos, enclosure) and Latin cohors, with comparable meanings (multitude, troop).
