τηρός
Ancient Greek
Etymology
Relationship with Sanskrit चायति (cāyati, “to observe, perceive”) and Proto-Slavic *čajati (“to wait, expect”) has been assumed, suggesting a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *kʷeh₁y-. However, this is unsatisfactory, as Greek shows no trace of the root-final *-i-.
