Etymology

Assumed to be a cross of ὄνυξ (ónux, nail) and στόχος (stókhos, pillar of brick), στάχυς (stákhus, ear of wheat) or στόρθυγξ (stórthunx, spike, tine). Rather Pre-Greek in view of the suffix.
