μάκελλα
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- μακέλη (makélē)
Etymology
The similarity with δίκελλα (díkella) cannot be coincidental but a convincing explanation has yet to be found. Armenian մարկեղ (markeł, “mattock”) shows a remarkable similarity; it might be a loan from a common source. Unrelated are Lithuanian makaras (“big stave”) and Armenian մաճ (mač, “plough tail”). The variation "-ελλα/-έλη" shows a Pre-Greek origin.
