From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *pəw (“price”) (whence the verb Pela pʰau³⁵ (“expensive”)), with a nominaliser ''a³¹-'' added. Cognate with Burmese အဖိုး (a.hpui:, “price”), Old Chinese 寶 (OC *puːʔ), Sichuan Yi ꁌ (pu, “price”), Tangut 𗗦 (/*¹pʰə/, “price”), Tshobdun tə́-pʰu, Drung aŋ³¹ pɯ⁵³ (“price”) and Jingpho hpu (“price, expensive”). Compare Lhao Vo aphug', Zaiwa apau and Lianghe Achang a³¹pʰau³⁵.
