xeno- + -phora
Coined in 1807 by Gotthelf Fischer von Waldheim from ξένος (xénos, “strange/foreign or stranger/foreigner/guest”) + φορά (phorá, “carrying or burden”): they attach foreign objects to their shells, including other shells.
