From Middle English withtaken, equivalent to with- + take.

  1. (transitive, archaic) To rebuke; reprimand.
  2. (transitive, Britain dialectal) To withhold; retain.
  3. (transitive) To receive; accept or withstand; (often reflexive) To take along; take with.
