From Proto-Inuit *ciɣjuɣ (“beak, muzzle”), from Proto-Eskimo *c(ǝ)ɣruɣ (“beak, nostrils, muzzle”). Cognate with Inuinnaqtun higguk (“beak”), Alutiiq cugg’eq (“beak, bill”), and Inupiaq sigguuk (“beak”).
