From Middle English schit, schyt, from Old English *sċite (dung) and sċitte (diarrhoea), from Proto-West Germanic *skiti, from Proto-Germanic *skīta-, *skītaz, *skitiz, from Proto-Indo-European *skeyd- (to split, divide, separate).
