From Pre-Germanic *Hus-néh₂-, from one of two possible sources:
- Proto-Indo-European *h₁ews- (“to burn”). Cognate with Ancient Greek εὕω (heúō, “to singe”), Latin ūrō (“to burn”), Sanskrit ओषति (óṣati, “to burn”).
- Proto-Indo-European *h₂ews- (“dawn”).
