Proto-Finnic
Etymology
Possibly borrowed from Proto-Germanic *hleutaną (“to obtain, acquire”), or already from earlier Northwest Indo-European *kleuda-. As also in e.g. *keühä and *peütä, adherence to vowel harmony indicates an early date of loaning.
The word has earlier been compared with Hungarian lel (“to find”), and their common ancestor could be reconstructed as *lewdä-. However, an absense of cognates in all other Uralic languages leaves this etymology less certain.
