Etymology

From *maka·l- (scrape, shovel, remove (snow)) + *-i(x)po(w)- (snow) (compare *so·kixpowi (it snows)). Literally "it shovels snow", in reference to the animals' habit of using their hooves to dig through snow to find lichens to eat.
