Etymology
Borrowed from Ancient Greek πλατύς (platús), from Proto-Indo-European *pl̥th₂us, zero grade of *pleth₂os (whence πλάτος (plátos)). Cognates include Proto-Germanic *flataz, Sanskrit पृथु (pṛthú), Avestan 𐬞𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬚𐬎 (pərəθu) and Lithuanian platus; compare English flat and Old Norse flatr (which is the source of the English term).
