Etymology
First attested as de Arsnan around 1100. Etymology unknown. Relationships have been proposed to Latin arx (“arch”), arsus (“land cleared by slash-and-burn agriculture”), Dutch aars (“arse, rear”) and Old English ærsc- (“agricultural land, game park”).
