Derived from Late Latin ad pressum, from Latin ad + pressum. It could either represent an inherited form, in which case the lack of diphthongization or a final vowel would be due to the word being predominantly unstressed (the expected outcome otherwise would be *aprieso), or it could represent a borrowing from Gallo-Romance; cf. Old Catalan aprés, French après.
