1. (aviation) Entering, or having entered, the airfield in preparation for landing.

     Look up the recommended speed for the landing pattern. You'll find tables for varying loads. Okay so far. Now, note that a speed is established for the approach phase and another slower one for over the fence.

     You can usually wait until you are "over the fence" before you chop the power.
