From Middle English outgang, from Old English ūtgang (“an outgoing, exit”), from Proto-Germanic *ūtgangaz, equivalent to out- +‎ gang. Cognate with Dutch uitgang (“exit”), Old High German ūzgang (“exit”) (German Ausgang). More at out, gang.
