From Latin hostem, accusative singular of hostis (“enemy, stranger”), from Proto-Italic *hostis, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰóstis (“guest, stranger”). Compare Catalan host (“army”), Italian oste (“army, host”), Romanian oaste (“army, host”).
