Etymology
From Old Swedish aftonse, from aftons with an added -e of unclear meaning, but cf. i morse and dialectal forms i vintrase for i vintras and nunnase for nunnas (“just, quite recently”). The development was likely i aftonse > i aftese > i aftse > i afse. See afton and -s (“adverbial suffix”).
